Why Check Your Social Media Previews?
When you share a link on social media, platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp display a preview card. This preview includes an image, title, and description pulled from your page's Open Graph (OG) meta tags.
If these tags are missing or incorrect, your shared links may appear broken, have no image, or show irrelevant text. This can significantly reduce click-through rates and make your content look unprofessional.
What Are Open Graph Tags?
Open Graph is a protocol created by Facebook that allows web pages to become rich objects in social graphs. The essential OG tags include:
- og:title - The title of your page as it should appear in the preview
- og:description - A brief description of the content
- og:image - The image URL for the preview (recommended: 1200x630px)
- og:url - The canonical URL of your page
Twitter Card Tags
Twitter uses its own meta tags (twitter:card, twitter:title, etc.) but will fall back to OG tags if Twitter-specific tags aren't present. The twitter:card tag determines the card type: summary, summary_large_image, app, or player.
